Maritime Science

The RFISD Maritime program of study introduces students to the occupations and education opportunities related to operating water vessels, maintenance procedures, maritime navigational aids, plus maritime traffic controls, and communications equipment to ensure conformance with federal safety regulations.

 

Students in Shipboard Engineering will learn the functions, troubleshooting, maintenance, and repair of the systems and components of maritime engines such as outboards, and portable dewatering pumps. In addition, students will receive instruction in safety, emergency procedures, and shipboard auxiliary systems.

 

Students will also be able to launch, operate, recover, and maintain a boat on their own. They will be provided opportunities to speak to local Captains, Deckhands, and Marine Engineers and bring the class to see the industry at work. Students have an opportunity for after-school, weekend, and summer internships.

In this course, students will learn about work and recreation on the water through practice. They will learn about maritime careers in the area and skills needed to get into those careers. Students will earn the NCCER CORE certificate, which is the safety foundation on which industry of any kind, including maritime, can build upon. The certificate covers training from proper PPE and electrical shock hazards to scaffold building and hand tool use. Students will learn the basics of seamanship such as line and boat handling as well as the basics of 12v electricity and engine maintenance. Students will take their TPWD Boaters Safety course.

This course focuses on hands-on experience with seamanship, engineering skills and their TPWD Boaters Safety course. Students will learn to properly launch/dock small watercraft; identify navigational aids and understand how to navigate in accordance with navigational “Rules of the Road”; perform watercraft maintenance; perform impeller inspection and replacement and conduct lower unit oil changes on outboard motors; inspect and replace hub bearings, tires and taillights on trailers; understand and locate MSDS and Tagout logs. Students will also receive training in first aide, CPR and AED. Students must be concurrently enrolled in Introduction to Shipboard Engineering.

This course is designed to provide training for entry-level employment and/or a basis for continuing education in shipboard engineering and merchant mariner credentialing. This course will build on the foundational knowledge previously acquired in the Principles of Maritime Science course. Shipboard engineering includes knowledge of the functions, troubleshooting, maintenance and repair of the systems and components of maritime engines such as outboards, and portable dewatering pumps. In addition, students will receive instruction in safety, emergency procedures, and shipboard auxiliary systems. Students must be concurrently enrolled in Maritime Science I.

In this course, students will be able to launch, operate, recover and maintain a boat on their own. It will provide opportunities for students to speak to Captains, Deckhands and Marine Engineers and bring the class to see the industry at work. Students will have the opportunity to see what jobs they qualify for, speak to businesses that offer those jobs, and, on an individual basis, work on additional skills needed to qualify for those jobs. Students will have the opportunity for afterschool, weekend and summer internships. Students must be concurrently enrolled in Advanced Shipboard Engineering.

In this course, students will learn about how things operate, from diesel engines to power generation; understand, create and troubleshoot 12v electrical systems; basics of HVAC to include braising. Students will have an opportunity for afterschool, weekend and summer internships. Students must be concurrently enrolled in Maritime Science II.
